Security Services of Connecticut, Inc. (SSC, Inc.) is a consumer-reporting agency that assembles and evaluates consumer information and provides consumer reports to third parties for the purpose of pre-employment screening and/or other purposes as permitted under federal, state, and local laws. Under the regulations of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the EEOC, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003, we may disclose information about your court and/or criminal history only to potential employer and other providers that you have authorized to access your information, or as otherwise permitted under the FCRA and/or other applicable laws.

This policy shall apply to all employees of SSC, Inc. engaged in the acquisition of personal information about any consumer whether for purposes of employment of such consumer, or for the benefit of a client seeking personal information about a consumer such as the performance of background checks, pre-employment screening, etc.

Personal Information That May Be Collected

  • State issued ID card or number
  • Date of birth
  • Home address
  • Credit reports
  • Employment history
  • Academic history
  • Criminal records

Personal information shall include information that is lawfully obtained from publicly available information, or from federal, state, or local government records lawfully made available to the general public.

Collection of Personal Information

We collect personal information about consumers in various ways. We may collect personal information about you from:

  • Information you provide directly to us or to our clients
  • Information from consumer reporting agencies
  • Information from anyone that you have authorized to provide such information to us, which could include prior employers 
  • Appropriate court jurisdictions as authorized

Disclosure of Information as Permitted or Required by Law

There are situations where we may disclose to third parties the personal information we collected as permitted or required by law. Information reported to our clients in the form of preemployment or background screening reports, and those with whom you have requested us toshare information. These include the following:

  • As expressly permitted by you
  • Our corporate affiliates as necessary or appropriate to provide the product or service you requested, to contact you in connection with product or service offerings, or for other legitimate business purposes.
  • Companies and individuals with whom we contract to perform business functions and services on our behalf. Such business functions may include analyzing data, providing legal, accounting and marketing services, and providing other support services. We carefully select and monitor our outside service providers who have access to personal information, and we require them to protect this information in a manner that is consistent with this privacy policy.
  • Government agencies, advisors, and other third parties to the extent necessary or appropriate in order to comply with applicable laws, or if such action is necessary to protect the rights, property or legal claims of SSC, Inc., its affiliated companies, or its clients.
  • If our company or our assets are acquired by another company. In that case, that company will assume responsibility for the personal information collected by us, and it will assume the rights and obligations regarding the information as described in this privacy policy.

Protecting Personal Information

We begin by safeguarding the security and integrity of personal information through procedures and technology designed for that purpose.

  • We maintain physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect your personal information. We regularly assess security standards and procedures to protect against unauthorized access to personal information.
  • We limit access to personal information only to those employees of SSC, Inc. who have the need to access such information in order to conduct consumer information research or perform their jobs for SSC, Inc. 
  • We maintain information only as long as is reasonably necessary to perform our services for our clients, comply with applicable laws, and protect SSC, Inc.’s legal rights.
  • Personal information is disposed of by methods specified in the federal FCRA.

Collection of Non-Personal Information

Our website automatically gathers certain statistical information such as the number and frequency of visitors. This information is only used in the aggregate and individuals cannot be identified from it. This aggregated information helps us to measure how individuals use the 
website and our services so that we can continually improve them.

Some of the information we collect via the website is gathered and maintained through the use of “session cookies.” A “session cookie” is a small file that is saved on your computer’s hard drive for the duration of your current session on our website, and most browsers will delete these files when closed. SSC, Inc. does not use “persistent cookies” – cookies that are intended to be stored beyond the current website session.

We may also collect certain non-personal data in connection with the website. For example, we may collect information on the browser that you use to access the website, the operating system that you are running, and certain information about the website you accessed immediately before you accessed our website. This information is used for internal purposes only.

All attempts to log in to our client, applicant, source, and reference websites are logged in detail. Both successful and failed logins are recorded in our database. This information does identify specific users and is used for security and auditing purposes.

For your protection, we will require identity confirmation procedures, including proper verification and confirmation that you are the individual who is entitled to request access, before providing information to you. If, for good reason, we are unable to provide you with access to your Personal Information or to correct information, we will let you know. Otherwise, if you are a U.S. resident we will provide you a copy of the report about you within 7 days, as it has been provided to your current or prospective employer, at no charge (as required by FCRA).

Preparation and Processing of Investigative Consumer Reports

Under California law, an “investigative consumer report” means a consumer report in which information on a consumer's character, general reputation, personal characteristics, or mode of living is obtained through any means. The term does not include a consumer report or other compilation of information that is limited to specific factual information relating to a consumer's credit record or manner of obtaining credit obtained directly from a creditor of the consumer or from a consumer reporting agency when that information was obtained directly from a potential or existing creditor of the consumer or from the consumer. SSC, Inc. prepares and processes investigative consumer reports about individuals at the request of businesses that are clients of SSC, Inc. for background screening, tenant screening and other similar purposes.

When preparing investigative consumer reports, SSC, Inc. utilizes procedures and policies designed to comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (15 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq., as amended) and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act (Cal. Civ. Code § 1786 et seq.). SSC, Inc. maintains a comprehensive written information security program which includes administrative, physical and technical safeguards that are designed to reasonably and appropriately protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of confidential information.

Personal Information Disclosure: United States or Oversees – In connection with its preparation and processing of investigative consumer reports, SSC, Inc. may transfer personal information about you to our clients, employees, data sources, authorized service providers or affiliates outside the United States and its territories.
