Common Questions About Active Shooter Training

Active shooter incidents are no-notice, high-impact events that require swift and coordinated responses by employees and emergency responders. The active shooter threat is increasing in frequency, and it has shown to be indiscriminate of age, geography or industry. It's about empowerment – and training can replace panic with effective action.
No. However, under OSHA, it is your responsibility to provide a safe and healthful workplace that is free from serious recognized hazards. The General Duty Clause of OSHA, specifically, the Life Safety Code regulations (29 CFR 1910.33 – 39) require that every workplace has an emergency action plan and each employee receives emergency response training. Although a few states have imposed specific obligations on a small segment of employers in particular industries, the vast majority of workplaces are governed only by the OSHA “general duty clause.”
SSC Active Shooter Response Training is one of the few comprehensive programs available in the Northeast. This course is unique in the fact that it teaches employees how to have a significant role in preventing violence in the workplace including as they develop their situational awareness and use common-sense strategies to create a safer and more secure working environment. Through the use of multimedia, classroom instruction, and scenario-based learning, your employees are provided critical information and skills from an emergency preparedness perspective. The program is focused on helping employees take a first responder approach.
The topic of workplace violence can be very unsettling, and SSC has taken great consideration in the planning of this program. SSC works directly with you to ensure that all aspects of the training are carefully choreographed and coordinated.
The classroom instruction is 90 minutes in length. Because most active shooter situations are over in less than 8 minutes – and often conclude prior to police arrival – the simulation exercise lasts approximately 8 minutes to provide the most realistic experience possible.
Please contact SSC directly to discuss your specific training needs.
Arrangements can be made to accommodate needs across several locations.
Just like fire drills, SSC recommends an annual refresher as best practice.
Air guns with no projectiles. No paint. No impact. There is only sound, which is necessary to allow those in the drill to respond accordingly
SSC recommends both, but the classroom presentation works for general awareness.
Yes, there will be many minutes until emergency responders can access the area where those injured may be. Training employees to stop bleeding, do CPR or apply tourniquets, may mean the difference between life and death.
Local police departments will be notified of the Active Shooter Response Training class – particularly if a simulation is being done. Unless requested, police don’t generally get involved with private company "internal training" – but may send a spokesperson to further instruct employees on emergency responder protocols.
